Wrapping up the first season of Zero to Umm, I’m taking a moment to look back on the year—what worked, what didn’t, and some of the biggest lessons along the way. Just a casual reflection to close things out.

Three or four days until the end of the year, just to reflect back on what an amazing set group season of interviews that I've been so fortunate to have this year.

I started I was just talking to Teha, the CEO of gunio, yesterday, and we were talking about the fact that the first episode I think I did during summer.

He was our first guest and previous to that I had tried a number of different times to set up a podcast and to get it going.

I've always wanted to sort of just talk to some really amazing and intelligent and passionate people, but I never really had the right audience to some really amazing and intelligent and passionate people, but I never really had the right audience.

And then I was on Teja's podcast for gunio and at the end of it he was like you should have one of these, you should do this, and I was like I've been thinking about it, I've been messing around with it, and then that was sort of the impetus that pushed me to set up Zero to Um and I had him on as the first guest and he's so casual and laid back.

It was just such a great conversation but it really was that spark that allowed me to to feel free enough and and it's the right topic for the right time, especially as I was starting to build out Stacklist and it was becoming more and more of not just a side project but a, a real thing, a real, real company, and it just worked so well in synchronicity and harmony with where I was at.

And now I look back just over the past I think we've done 11 episodes this year so far and I've been able to talk to some just amazing about how the early days of starting Contra, which now has over 800,000 people on the platform and they've successfully raised an amazing Series A and they're just growing by leaps and bounds.

But to hear the early days of when it was just a whisper of an idea and set right in the middle of the pandemic and that sort of worked for them and against them.

But just hearing some of these amazing stories of companies that have now gone from an idea to you know Series A and beyond, a and beyond it's so inspiring and I think it's helped me a lot on our journey is just to see how many different flavors of journeys there are and also the early perceptions that investors and outside participants had of these ideas, of these companies, and especially somebody like Contra as big as it is now and as much as it's sort of taking market dominance on one of these kind of platform, freelance platforms to have investors in the beginning say I don't think it's a good idea and that model is never going to work.

It is, it is working and it's great and I think about those sort of things, we've really taken those to heart with what we're building.

Right, we're building a social bookmarking site and it helps you organize things.

But as you have some of these stories and you talk to other people who have gone through and have now built sizable early stage companies and you hear about the same thing, the same sort of things that you're going through, I think it really helps you to adjust your aperture and your lens and to feel a little bit more confident in the vision and the scale and the scope of what you're building.

And that's been so helpful is to get the outside perspectives from such passionate and accomplished people, the outside perspectives from such passionate and accomplished people.

Sometimes, when you're building something like this, you're in a silo, you're in an echo chamber and you really only interact with a handful of people from the outside world and it's really critical that those people are the right people and that they have your you know your best interests and they, they give you objective feedback, but they they get a sense of what you're really going for and and when you come across people who don't get it, that you don't take that to heart and and that's not your validation and your proof point.

You know, but I just love for who was one of the founding team members of ClickUp and he was sharing the fact that everybody you know was sort of saying they should niche down and get really specific on what it is that they're building, and he relayed to me he was like I'm so glad that we didn't niche down or ClickUp would not be as big as it is today, and so it's really it's nice to, it's been a nice journey so far to go through this and I'm really appreciative and grateful that I've been able to meet with so many different people and you know talk about their companies and stories and I'm really excited to share with you all the people that we I've already had.

But some amazing discussions Marty and Will from agreecom, who've done such an amazing job, going from the day I met them as the day they did a public launch, and they've already gone over 11 or 12,000 users and they're raising their seed round and I mean it's just their rocket ship has already taken off and it's so amazing to hear those stories.

We'll also hear from Dr Octopus who, perry, has built an amazing network of non-linear thinkers, which I just so connect with and appreciate the idea of non-linear thinking and not sort of following traditional paths for how things can be approached or solved.

We're also talking to Simon from Vera has built a great system for being able to really offload a lot of the back office processes for small business owners.

We also have currently scheduled for January Tara from Rupa Health, and they've from when I met her, she's just had such an amazing ride building up this amazing health company and they've already gone through an acquisition, so it's going to be so interesting to hear that journey and that process, but this is only the episodes I have recorded and or scheduled for January.
